Platform compliance
SHIFT is an annotation layer over links. It is a place to keep what you learn and what you thought about it — the media itself stays where it came from, and plays there.
What SHIFT keeps for an item
- The link itself, and the title and author of what it points at.
- What the user wrote about it — their notes, rating, classification and highlights.
- A link to the platform's own thumbnail. SHIFT does not copy the image.
YouTube
- Video plays only through the official YouTube embedded player. SHIFT never downloads, re-hosts or re-streams video.
- The YouTube Data API is used for three things: syncing a public playlist the user asked us to sync, reading a video's own description and channel context so the archive can file it correctly, and finding recommendations — in Discovery, and when someone asks the companion for videos.
- Titles, channel names and thumbnail links obtained from the Data API are kept for at most 30 days, then deleted or refreshed.
- When a user adds a link by hand, the title and author come from YouTube's public oEmbed endpoint — the same one any site uses to show a link preview.
Spotify
- Used to read a public playlist the user asked us to sync. Nothing is downloaded, and no audio is served by SHIFT.
GIPHY
- Used for the GIF picker in messages. Searches are proxied through our server so the provider never sees who is searching; the chosen GIF is stored with the message.
